Richard Heuberger (1850–1914) came from a wealthy, art-loving Graz (Austria-Hungary) family. After working as an engineer, he decided to devote himself completely to music, working as choral director of the Vienna Singakademie, composer of instrumental music, ballets, cantatas and operas, music critic and music journalist. Shortly before the turn of the century, he tried his luck with operettas. Only his first work, the delicately orchestrated, splendidly hued “Opernball” (Opera Ball ) of 1898 – a beautiful and substantial echo of the Strauss era – has managed to maintain its position in the repertoire. In this work, Heuberger tried to create a new operetta style, the “comedy operetta”. He eschewed spectacular costumes and choruses, sentimentality and drama by picking up where Offenbach had left off in “La vie parisienne” and Strauss in “Die Fledermaus”. According to the great Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick, he succeeded in “preserving the purity of the Viennese operetta. The “Opernball” was a popular, witty piece and Heuberger accordingly avoided the effects of grand opera, both noisy passion andatered-down sentimentality.”

Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of His Time

Siegfried Kracauer's biography of the composer Jacques Offenbach is a remarkable work of social and cultural history. First published in German in 1937 and in English translation in 1938, the book uses the life and work of Offenbach as a focal point for a broad and penetrating portrayal of Second Empire Paris. Offenbach's immensely popular operettas have long been seen as part of the larger historical amnesia and escapism that pervaded Paris in the aftermath of 1848. But Kracauer insists that Offenbach's productions must be understood as more than glittering distractions. The fantasy realms of such operettas as La Belle Hélène were as one with the unreality of Napoleon III's imperial masquerade, but they also made a mockery of the pomp and pretense surrounding the apparatuses of power. At the same time, Offenbach's dreamworlds were embedded with a layer of utopian content that can be seen as an indictment of the fraudulence and corruption of the times.

The Beautiful Galatea Overture: Study score

By the 1860s, the operettas of French composer Jacques Offenbach were becoming ppopular with the Viennese audience. Franz von Suppé, already established in the Austrian Imperial capital as an operetta composer and conductor, found the new competition stimulating enough to produce a new two-act operetta based upon the classic tale of the sculptor Pygmalion falling in love with his statue of Galathée. The first performance was given in Berlin on June 30, 1863 with the Vienna premiere at the Carltheater on September 9, 1865. Die schöne Galathée proved to be one of the composer's most successful, with performances in London and New York. Though the operetta is largely forgotten now, Suppé's brilliant overture has never left the concert repertoire. Like the others of this series, the study score offered here - for the first time in a convenient and affordable format - is a licensed reprint of the newly-engraved and reasreached large score first issued by E.F. Kalmus in 2006. IMSLP page All Music Guide

Jacques Offenbach (1819–80) ranks among the greatest composers of lighthearted operettas, and his famous songs continue to charm millions who know neither their names nor their composer. This volume features the sheet music for 38 popular songs from 14 operettas. All are reproduced from the original sheet music — a few from the original piano-vocal scores, and some with lively pictorial covers. Contents include four songs from Orpheé aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld), five songs from La belle Hélène, four songs from La vie parisienne, six songs from La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein, seven songs from La Périchole, three songs from La fille du tambour-major, and more. The complete French texts appear on the music pages, and a separate section offers English translations. All songs were chosen by Antonio de Almeida, a renowned conductor and authority on Offenbach, who also provides an informative Introduction.
